Which Air Scrubber Is Right for You?

Three decisions: how much air you need to move, whether you need a carbon stage for odour and VOCs, and whether one person has to carry it.

Three stage or four stage? Three stage units run a mesh or pre-filter, a pleated media filter, and a True HEPA filter. Four stage units add an activated carbon bed, the only stage that captures odour and VOCs. A HEPA only scrubber will clear the haze from a fire loss and leave the smell, because the smell is gas phase. Fire, sewage, or chemical odour needs four stage. Dust and spores do not.

Size by air changes, not square footage. Divide the enclosure volume in cubic feet by 60, then multiply by your target air changes A 20 by 20 room with 8 foot ceilings is 3,200 cubic feet, so four air changes needs roughly 215 CFM and six needs about 320. Undersizing forces the unit to run flat out, which shortens filter life.
